Practice Journal: Am7 Arpeggio

As I practice, I keep a notebook full of blank manuscript paper handy in case I come up with something worth remembering.  Here is one such thing — a nice, fast minor seventh arpeggio:

Am7 arpeggio

Notice how we cover a wide range by shifting positions.  We start with the e-form shape, then transfer to d-form between the fourth and third strings.

You can create variations on this arpeggio quite easily.  For example, it’s pretty easy to repeat either instance of the ascending E-G-A.  I also like to repeat the first three descending notes (E-C-A).  Experiment with repeating other three-note segments within this arpeggio.  The more repetition within the arpeggio, the more of a cascade effect you create.
