Thelonious Monk’s Advice

Here is an image that has been around the internet a few times. If you play in a group and haven’t yet come across it in your FaceBook feed, check it out:Monk's Advices 1960

This is a transcription of advice Thelonius Monk gave his bandmates in 1960, transcribed by saxophonist Steve Lacy. Some items are rather cryptic (“If you don’t want to play, tell a joke or dance…”), while others are vaguely uplifting (“They tried to get me to hate white people, but someone would always come along and spoil it.”).

No one deserves guru status. Take these statements for what they are worth. But they do offer a peek into one of modern music’s most enigmatic minds.
